CANoe and CANalyzer share many of the same windows and functions. One place they differ is Measurement and Simulation. While CANalyzer can only simulate one ECU, both of these functions can be performed in the same window, the Measurement Setup Window. However because CANoe can simulate more than one ECU, the simulated ECUs are configured in the Simulation Setup window and all measurement tasks are configured in the Measurement Setup window.
What is the Simulation Setup window?
The Simulation Setup window is where all communication nodes are defined including simulated nodes, generator blocks, and replay blocks. Any block in CANoe that can be used to communicate with the bus is defined in this window. To access this window at any time, click the View menu and select Simulation Setup.
Can this window be configured?
Yes, the window has some configuration options. By right-clicking in the white field, you can enable and disable the System view. This view is on by default and displays all nodes, channels, and databases associated with the current network in the right-hand pane.
Enabling Object view will add another pane to the right, this one containing information about the currently selected node (block) in the current network.
Each network will be displayed with its own tab at the bottom of the window. By clicking on either the desired tab, or the network in the System view window pane, the screen will change to display that network.
How do I add nodes/blocks to the Simulation Setup window?
To add a node/block, there are two methods:
- Right-click on the bus hotspot and select the type of block you wish to insert.

- Right-click on the type of block you wish to insert in the System view window pane and select the block to insert.

What is the Measurement Setup window?
The Measurement Setup window contains the analysis portion of CANoe. All measurement and data collection processes are performed here. Blocks placed in this window will not communicate on the bus, but with the window attached. To access this window, click the View menu and select Measurement Setup.
Can this window be configured?
The configuration options for this window are limited. By right-clicking on any of the hot spots it is possible to insert additional analysis windows, filters, or program nodes. Additionally by right-clicking in the white field, it is possible to change the display fonts and the zoom level to increase visibility and readability.
How are these windows related?
While each window is configured separately from the other, both are used as an integral part of the CANoe configuration. Data does pass between these windows, but in only one direction. Data flows from the Simulation Setup window to the Measurement Setup window. This relation ship is symbolized by the Bus Node in the Measurement Setup window.
The >> indicates the direction of data flow through the window.
